The Central Iowa EMS Directors Association, Mercy College of Health Sciences, and Des Moines Area Community College are sponsoring a 24-hour Advanced Refresher on March 12-14, 2010 at the Mercy College of Health Sciences Campus, Des Moines (Brennan Auditorium). KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

The Central Iowa EMS in Action Conference welcomes Ian and Anna Smith as our keynote speakers in 2010. The Smiths are born and raised in Iowa and currently live and work in Las Vegas, Nevada. They come highly recommended as educators and colleagues within our EMS community. Welcome to Ian and Anna!

Ian has served as a Paramedic for the Las Vegas valley and surrounding regions for the past seventeen years, encompassing both ground and rotor wing based environments. With the North Las Vegas Fire Department, Ian is passionate about enhancing improved pre-hospital care through Paramedic Field precepting and formal EMS education.

Anna has worked in various aspects of critical care nursing including, medical, surgical, cardio-thoracic recovery, PACU, post-cath recovery, special procedures and trauma. She began working as an Emergency Nurse and branched into pre-hospital nursing. She has been an EMS-RN since 2004. She helped achieve accreditation as a Chest Pain Center with PCI, develop a stroke protocol system and I began work on acute stroke treatment. She is currently the Nurse Administrator for a busy Primary Stroke Center. She continues to pursue improved care for vascular health patients and just recently developed a Therapeutic Hypothermia program. She works closely with the EMS community and the American Heart Association helping to educate patients with vascular health issues, both in risk recognition and prevention.

We also want to thank Dr. Jonathan Thompson for his time and commitment to CIEMS in Action as a Keynote Speaker. For those of you who have had the pleasure to hear Dr. Thompson speak, you will agree that it is an honor and privilege for him share his knowledge with us at this year’s CIEMS conference. Welcome Dr. Thompson!

Dr. Jonathan Thompson, MD, Associate State Medical Examiner, Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner jthompso@idph.state.ia.us
Dr. Thompson currently practices as the Associate State Medical Examiner for Iowa and is Board Certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology as well as Forensic Pathology. He completed his Forensic Pathology fellowship at Hennepin county Medical Examiner’s Office in 2007 and has extensive teaching experience as both Medical Staff and Assistant Professorship at the University of Minnesota and Hennepin county medical Center. Dr. Thompson will be speaking on Traumatic Injuries and the role of the medical examiner in cases of basic injury types seen by prehospital providers.


THE CENTRAL IOWA "EMS IN ACTION" CONFERENCE WILL NOT BE CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER!

The Conference Committee does not consider Iowa weather to be a condition to cancel the conference.  However, due to weather-related or other presenter emergencies, the instructors and topics are subject to change without notice.  No refunds will be issued because of the weather, this is Iowa, plan accordingly.  Please travel safe!

REFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY

Requests for refunds will be honored when received seven calendar days prior to the conference. A $35 administrative fee will be deducted for cancellations.  In the unlikely event that the conference is cancelled or postponed due to insufficient enrollments or unforeseen circumstances, CIEMS will fully refund registration fees but cannot be held responsible for any other expenses, including cancellation or change charges assessed by airlines, hotels, travel agencies, or other organizations. We will not cancel the conference due to weather. No refunds will be provided if you are unable to attend due to weather.
